William Jacob Glisson, Sr.

Martinez, GA – Mr. William Jacob Glisson, Sr., 90, beloved husband of Mrs. Mary Welch Glisson, went home from his residence to be with our Lord on Thursday, May 20, 2010.

Mr. Glisson was a native of Girard, GA (Burke County). He joined the Civilian Conservation Corps and served at Monte Sano Mountain near Huntsville, Alabama. He served in the United States Navy for 23 years, achieving the rank of Warrant Officer. He served during World War II and the Korean War. During his stint in the Navy, he was on sea duty 19 continuous years, serving on various ships including the USS Platte, USS Cimmaron, USS Sabine, and the USS President Jackson. Toward the end of his naval service he was deployed at Guantanamo, Cuba and at the Augusta, GA recruiting office where he met his dear wife of 49 years. He was employed by the United States Postal Service from 1964 until 1982.

After retiring, he enjoyed being with his family (including his beloved pet dog Frisky), reading, cooking, bird watching, and working in his yard. He was a 32nd degree Mason and a member of Martinez Chapter #464, Order of the Eastern Star. He was affiliated with the Military Officers Association of America. Mr. Glisson was a member of Girard Methodist Church, Girard, GA.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by two sons, William Jacob Glisson, Jr. of Martinez, GA, Stanford Lee LaGrone, Evans, GA; one granddaughter, Mrs. Vanissa LaGrone Campbell (David) of Statesboro, GA, two great granddaughters; one grandson, C. Ryan Bohler (Stephanie), two great grandsons, one brother in law; F. Jerome Padgett, Jr., and a host of nieces, nephews, and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, the late Lillie Belle Oliver and the late W.J. Glisson, three sisters; the late Louise G. Brigham, the late Lillie Mae G. Dixon, the late Ruth G. King, and one brother, the late Frank Stephen “Banker” Glisson. He was the best husband and father anyone could hope for and we feel very blessed for all the years we had with him.

A celebration of his life will be held at the Warren Baptist Church Chapel, on Monday, May 24, 2010 at 11:00 AM with the Rev Roger Henderson officiating. Burial with full military honors will follow at Hillcrest Memorial Park. The family will receive friends Sunday, May 23, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.

Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Gollmer, Henry Leal, Frank Warren, E. Charles Welch, William Henry Welch, David T. Welch, and Virgil L. Stewart.

The family would like to express their thanks to his faithful caregivers, Jacqueline Hardison, Lizzette Elam, Leila D. Elam, Caroline Bryant, Ankhanhetrang Campbell, Shymeka Wideman, Vera L. Collins, as well as the employees of Trinity Hospice and Day Break Medical Resource Group. Special thanks also to Dr. Kila Dabney-Smith, Dr. Erik Rupard, and Barbara, Jan, and Maria, all of Eisenhower Army Medical Center.
