Augusta, GA---Mr. William H. Avery, Jr., of Atlanta, GA passed away Tuesday, February 16, 2009 at University Hospital.

Mr. Avery is survived by his wife of 59 years, Irene G. Avery and his brothers, John Avery and Thomas Avery. In addition, he is survived by his children David B. Avery and Carolyn Avery Grese; daughter-in-law Dusty Avery and son-in-law Frank Grese Jr.;
five grandchildren, Paul C. Avery, Frank Grese III, Ryan Avery, Benjamin Avery and Katie Grese; and two great-grandchildren, Jackson and Dylan Avery; and his uncle, Thomas G. Cowart. He was preceded in death by his son, William H. Avery, III.

Mr. Avery was a graduate of Georgia Tech where he was a member of Sigma Nu fraternity and then received a Masters degree at Roosevelt University. He was a retired Lt. Col. in the U.S. Army and received many military honors while serving in North Africa, Italy, France and Germany during WW II as well in the Vietnam War. He also retired from Georgia Municipal Association. After retiring, Mr. Avery became an avid philatelist and owned Dunwoody Stamp Company. Mr. and Mrs. Avery moved from Atlanta leaving many long friendships, to their new home in Augusta at Brandon Wilde in 2006. He was very fond of living at Brandon Wilde and the many friends he made during his time in Augusta.

A celebration of his life will be held on Thursday, February 19, 2009 at 11:00 AM at the Church of Our Savior, 4227 Columbia Rd. in Martinez, with Reverend Lou Scales officiating. A reception for friends and family will be held at Brandon Wilde, 4275 Owens Road in Evans, at 12:30 PM.

Donations in lieu of flowers may be made to the National Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, Inc., 1501 NW 9th Avenue, Bob Hope Road, Miami, FL 33136-1494.
