William "Bill" Nuckols

July 25, 1944 — May 21, 2022

Dr. William A. (Bill) Nuckols passed away peacefully at his home in Evans, Georgia, on Saturday, May 21, 2022.

Bill was a loving husband and father, a devoted family physician, and a man of many talents. He played piano beginning in his adolescent years. He enjoyed projects and became quite the craftsman, often building pieces of furniture. He enjoyed hunting, especially ducks and geese, with his three sons and father-in law. Bill loved baseball, as a player, coach, and fan. He followed the New York Yankees religiously, and his favorite player was Mickey Mantle. In fact, had his wife permitted, he would have named his first son Mickey Mantle Nuckols. While in college and medical school, Bill required his mother to keep player statistics so he could keep up with both his studies and his favorite team. As a player, Bill excelled as a high school pitcher and later as a starting outfielder for the University of Richmond Spiders during his freshman year. As a father, he coached several of his sons’ teams. And, in his golden years, Bill enthusiastically cheered on his grandsons and his talented granddaughter (gymnastics, dance, etc.). He raised his family and practiced medicine for over 30 years in Abingdon, Virginia. He was a dedicated physician who was attentive to his patients’ needs and was in every way a beloved small-town country doctor. He also had a mischievous streak and was quite the prankster. Above all, Bill was devoted to his family. He met his wife in high school and dedicated his life to taking care of her. He also raised his sons to be responsible, polite gentlemen and ensured they had the means to make the most of themselves.

Bill was preceded in death by his son, Coy Scott Nuckols. He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Linda Nuckols, and their Bichon-Poodle, Daisy; their oldest son, Troy Nuckols; their middle son, Tate Nuckols, and wife, Heather Nuckols; and their youngest son, Tyler Nuckols, wife, Tiffany Nuckols, and grandchildren Aubrie, Maddox, and Easton Nuckols.

A celebration of life will be held at 11:00 a.m. on June 11, 2022, at Isle of Palms First United Methodist Church in Isle of Palms, South Carolina, where Bill and Linda lived in retirement for nearly 20 years. Bill will ultimately be inurned in his birthplace, Richmond, Virginia. Rest in peace, Pop. You deserve it.
