Virginia Elizabeth "Libby" Carswell

January 18, 1959 — April 11, 2023

Virginia Elizabeth “Libby” Carswell, 64, of Evans, GA, went to be with the Lord on April 11, 2023.

Libby was born in Augusta, Georgia, to John Leonard Steed, Jr. and Virginia Louise Brown on January 18, 1959. She graduated from Augusta College in 1981 with a Bachelor of Science degree. Libby married the love of her life, Joseph S. Carswell, on May 19, 1984.

Libby was a dedicated and loving mother; her greatest pride was caring for her two incredible sons. Once they were grown, she worked for ten years as the Principal’s Secretary at Grovetown High School. She retired from that to be a committed Nonnie to her two granddaughters and to help her sons with their insurance agency.

For over 43 years, Libby has been a member of the Abilene Choir. She volunteered in the nursery, was a long-time youth Sunday school teacher, a participant and Bible study leader for the Women’s Bible Study, and was involved with Vacation Bible School and volunteered in the Music Ministry. She cared deeply for others and truly had a servant’s heart.

Another passion of Libby’s was quality time with those she cared about. She cherished family time; anywhere she was with family was her favorite place to be. She was active in school activities when her boys were young and a dedicated soccer mom for years. Libby was big on holidays and was a wonderful cook. She was always proud of the fact that she spent time with her boys every single day.

Libby is survived by her mother, Virginia Brown; husband of 39 years, Joe Carswell; sons, Matt Carswell and Clay (Amie) Carswell; granddaughters, Lanie and Bayleigh Carswell; siblings, Diane (Henry) Moore, Lynne Byrne, Julie (Gary) Thigpen, Pearre (Alana) Morgan and Jim (Elaine) Steed; uncle, Bob Brown, her dear friends in the Birthday Club and numerous nieces, nephews, and countless friends to cherish her memory.

She is preceded in death by her father, John Leonard Steed, Jr.; stepmother, Phyllis Steed; brother, John Leonard Steed III; brother-in-law, Bob Byrne; sister, Donna Steed; and uncle, George Brown.
