Ruth Waller Hill

Evans, GA - Ruth Waller Hill, 91, died Sunday June 14, 2009 at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center.

A celebration of her life will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday June 18, 2009 at the Church of the Good Shepherd with the Very Reverend Robert D. Fain celebrant. Burial will follow at Summerville Cemetery.

Ruthie was born in Augusta on April 11, 1918. She graduated from the University of Georgia and earned a graduate degree from Duke University. While working as a dietician at Fort Gordon she met her future husband Raymond Dunlap Hill, to whom she was married for sixty-three years until his death in 2005. As the wife of a career Army officer, Ruth became accustomed to moving every few years, making lasting friends and a stable home for her family at each stop. After Ray’s retirement from the Army, they returned to her native Augusta where she resumed her excellent golf game, raised a profusion of flowers and fruits in her garden and was an avid bridge player. She was an active member and then sustainer of Junior League and a member of the Colonial Dames of the State of Georgia. One of her great pleasures was hosting a sumptuous and popular party every Masters weekend (except when Masters and Holy Week coincided!).

Ruthie is survived by her daughter Ruth Simmons and husband Baxter of Hampton, VA, son Raymond D. Hill, Jr. and wife Katherine, of Atlanta, son John E. Hill and wife Cheryl of Atlanta, and seven grandchildren. She was pre-deceased by the four Waller boys she grew up with: her brothers, Earll (Tubby) and Jackie and her double first cousins, Sam and Harcourt.
