Mr. Robert Black Lamar

Augusta, GA – Mr. Robert Black Lamar, 76, of Augusta, GA died Wednesday, July 20, 2011 at home. He was the beloved husband of Kathryn McGill Lamar for 31 years.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, July 23, 2011 at the Church of The Good Shepherd, 2230 Walton Way, with the Right Reverend Robert D. Fain officiating. Interment will follow in Summerville Cemetery.

Mr. Lamar was a native of Augusta. He was a financial advisor for 45 years, retiring from Morgan Stanley Smith Barney. Mr. Lamar was a member of the Church of the Good Shepherd where he had served on the Vestry. He also served on the Board of Trustees of Episcopal Day School. Mr. Lamar was actively involved in many civic and social organizations including; Augusta Country Club, Green Boundary Club, Bachelors Club of Augusta, The Heritage Club, Pinetucky Gun Club, Beech Island Agricultural Club, Huguenot Society of South Carolina, and Society of Colonial Wars in Georgia. He was a graduate of the Academy of Richmond County, attended the University of the South, and graduated from the University of Georgia where he was a member of Chi Phi Fraternity.

Bob’s love of quail hunting with his Brittany spaniel, “Count”, and his Setter, “Spot” were such happy times for him. All of his friends have enjoyable “Bob” stories. Bob was a big man with a big heart who led a big life. Just two weeks prior to his death he insisted on a final trip to the mountains to sit by the stream, watch the ducks fly, and cast a final line.

Mr. Lamar is survived by his wife, Kathryn McGill Lamar; his children, George Johnson Lamar, Grady Overton Jackson, III “Gray”, Henry Wright Lamar, Kathryn Nixon Rast, and Leigh Jackson Hearn; a daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Maynard Jackson; two sons-in-law, Edward Monts Rast, Jr., and Carlton Walter Hearn, Jr.; his brother, Wayland Wright Lamar; his grandchildren, Eliza Huxley Nixon, Walker Alexander Nixon, Samuel Peyton McGill Jackson, Carlton Walter Hearn, III, Virginia Troutman Jackson, Erin Elizabeth Rast, and Ansley Rast Turnblad; his brother-in-law, Sam Clary McGill, and by his sisters-in-law, Krista Williams Lamar and Flora Ann McGill.

Mr. Lamar was the son of Margaret Wright and George Black Lamar. He was predeceased by his first wife Henrietta Johnson Lamar.

Pallbearers will be William Edwin Hollingsworth, Jr., James Fleming Norvell, Dr. Harvey J. Sanders, Jr., John Baker Lewis, Lee Neel, III, R. Phillip Christman, and Dan M. Connelly.

Honorary pallbearers include William Breckingridge Brigham, Brad Bennett, Levi Hill, III, William H. Craven, Jr., Lloyd Glisson, and William Pete Whatley.
