Richard Russell Barbee

Augusta, GA.- Richard Russell Barbee, D.D.S., 70, entered into rest on Tuesday, December 9, 2008. He was the son of the late Billie Wallace Barbee and the late Waring Russell Barbee.

Private graveside services will be held on Monday, December 15, 2008 at Westover Memorial Park with Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating.

Richard grew up in Jacksonville, FL and graduated from Dupont High School. He then served in the United States Coast Guard and was a reservist for eight years. He attended Florida State University and graduated with honors from Emory University School of Dentistry. That year, he received the Mosby Scholarship Book Award for Scholastic Excellence. He faithfully served this community as a dentist for 29 years. He was a former member of the Georgia Dental Association and the American Dental Association.
He loved music and was an accomplished pianist.

He was an Eagle Scout at the age of 13 and was a former member of the National Eagle Scout Association which promotes and supports scouting ideals through service. He is a member of the Augusta Country Club. Richard is an Episcopalian by faith but attended First Presbyterian Church.

He is survived by his wife of 48 years, Alice Miles Barbee of Augusta, GA; a daughter Dr. Anita Barbee Cunningham and son-in-law Dr. Michael Robert Cunningham and two grandsons Robert Michael Richard Cunningham and Benjamin Miles Hillbrook Cunningham of Louisville, KY as well as Cliff Barbee, Waring Barbee, Betty Willis, Ann Johnson and numerous nieces and nephews.

His family would like to thank the staff at Barbara Hall’s Personal Care Home for the love and care given to Richard.

A visitation at Platt’s Funeral Home on Crawford Avenue will be held on Sunday, December 14, 2008 from 5 to 7 pm.
