Mr. Richard Patrick Murphy, husband of Dr. Ana Alvarez Murphy, and father of Amanda, JoAna, and Katie Murphy, entered into rest on Saturday, January 9, 2010 in Augusta, GA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, January 13, 2010 in St. Mary’s on the Hill Catholic Church with the Rev. Mark VanAlstine officiating.
Rich was born on December 13, 1954, in Cranford, New Jersey. After graduation from Cranford High School, he earned degrees in economics and government from Cornell University where he was a cross country runner. He then earned a JD degree as well as a Masters degree in economics from the University of Michigan, where he graduated cum laude in 1980. Rich was the Chief of the Branch of Criminal Reference at the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Washington D.C. before moving to San Diego, California where he was an Associate with the firm of Gray, Cary, Ware, & Freidenrich. In 1999, Rich became the Senior Trial Counsel and then the Assistant District Administrator (Enforcement) for the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission in Atlanta, Georgia. In July of 2006 until the present, Rich served as Senior Legal Advisor in the Office of Legal Affairs for the Medical College of Georgia. He was a member of the National Association of College and University Attorneys and the Augusta Bar Association.
With all Rich’s professional accomplishments and successes, all who knew him know that the light of his life was his family. He married his college sweetheart, Ana Maria Alvarez on June 25, 1977 in Miami, Florida. In 1994, they had triplet daughters to whom Rich has been a devoted, exemplary father. He taught his children by example and gave them a path in life filled with love, guidance, and morals. He shared with them a love of sports, many of which he helped coach, proudly calling them “Team Murphy.” He was a gifted photographer filling their home with wonderful action shots from every soccer, basketball, volleyball, and cross country event in which they were involved, along with beautiful pictures of nature. Rich continued his love of running throughout his life and was an avid fitness enthusiast. He was a parishioner at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Augusta. Rich will be greatly missed and remembered for his sense of humor and his unfailing devotion to his family. Survivors include his father, Richard Frances Murphy; mother, Marie Conlon Murphy; brothers, Kevin and Brian Murphy; mother-in-law, Mirta Gutierrez Alvarez; brother-in-law, Armando Jose Alvarez, Jr.; sister-in-law, Cristina Alvarez Farris; and a number of nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be Kevin Murphy, Brian Murphy, Armando Alvarez, Jack Hall, Harry Bachlor, Mike Brown, Andrew Newton & Jon Farris, Jr.

The family will receive friends Tuesday, January 12, 2010 from 6:00 PM until 8:00 PM at the funeral home.
