Augusta, Ga. – Osric Hargett, 81, passed away on Friday, November 30, 2012 at Kentwood Nursing Home in Augusta, GA.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Saturday, December 8, 2012 at 12:00 pm at St. Joseph Catholic Church with Rev. Thomas Healy officiating. Burial will be Monday, December 10, 2012 at 2:00 pm at Fort Jackson National Cemetery.

Ms. Hargett was born on March 21, 1931 to Elijah and Allena Payton Hargett. She grew up in New Bern, North Carolina, and graduated from West Street High in 1949. After high school, she attended North Carolina College in Durham, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Commercial Education in 1953. After college, Ms. Hargett joined the United States Army, Women’s Army Corps as a medic, serving as an Emergency Medical Tech in Germany and Korea from 1953 to 1955. She was decorated with the National Defense Service Medal, and the Army of CCC Medal (Germany). Her most significant duty assignment was Wac Plat Sta Com Det B PE 7802 AU. After her tour of duty, she received a Bachelor of Science degree in Nursing in 1961 from AT&T University in Greensboro, N.C., and a Masters of Education degree in Health Education in 1979 from Jersey City Teachers College in Jersey City, New Jersey and a Master of Education degree from City University of New York in New York, N.Y. Ms. Hargett was a nursing supervisor at Coney Island Hospital in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Bird S. Coler Hospital in Roosevelt Island, N.Y. , served as a nursing teacher at Kings Borough Community College and special education teacher at Washington Irving Academic High School, Jane Adams Vocational High School, and Riker’s Island Educational Facility in Brooklyn, N.Y. In her later years, she worked as a GED teacher for Augusta Technical College in Augusta, GA., as well as working at the Aiken Nursing Home in Aiken, South Carolina.

Ms. Hargett was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Augusta, GA., and was involved in the Council of Catholic Women. She was instrumental in putting on the first “Night in Paris” fundraising gala for the church. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her friends. She was affiliated with the New York State Nurses Association, the Delta Sigma Theta Sorority , Lamba Kappa Mu Sorority, and was a lifetime member of the Proctor-Hopson Post No. 1896, Veterans of Foreign Wars of the United States in Jamaica, N.Y.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Elijah and Allena Payton Hargett, and her brother, Samuel Hargett.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday, December 7, 2012 from 6:30 until 8:30 pm
