Norma Ruth Hickman

October 4, 1937 — October 18, 2022

Mrs. Norma Ruth Hickman, beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother went to her heavenly home Tuesday, October 18, 2022. She went peacefully in her sleep and is now with our loving Lord.

Norma grew up in El Reno Oklahoma, born October 4, 1937, graduated from El Reno High School in 1955, attended Oklahoma University and went on to earn a BA and Master of Education degrees and the Specialist in Education in Library Science at Northeastern Oklahoma State University. She made a beautiful life with her family in Tahlequah, OK, and then Augusta, GA, where she was a devoted educator and lover of books in the Columbia County School System. She was chosen as Media Specialist of the Year during her tenure at North Columbia and Bel Air Elementary Schools.

After retirement in 1998, Norma served as librarian for her home church, Wesley UMC, and worked with Friends of the Columbia County Library, serving as Vice President and President of Friends. She later served as Chairman of the Columbia County Library Board of Trustees and was a recipient of the Rotary Club Jean Harris Award for Community Service. In her last few years living in Johns Creek, GA she brightened the lives of so many residents and caregivers at The Memory Center of Atlanta.

Norma was beloved by her husband Elige for 59 years until 2018, and now they are reunited in heaven. She is survived by daughter Andrea Dunn of Lawrenceville, GA; son and daughter-in-law Marc and Maggie Edmonson of Broken Arrow OK; their daughters (Norma’s granddaughters) Kelly Ambriz (husband Conrad) and Lindsey Vaughan (husband Dillon); and 3 great grandsons, Henry & Brooks Vaughan, and Jackson Ambriz.

A celebration of life service will honor Norma on Tuesday, October 25th, 2:00pm at McKendree United Methodist Church in Lawrenceville. Her earthly resting place will be in the Wesley UMC Memorial Garden in Augusta.
