Nina Harris

April 23, 1926 — March 17, 2022

Nina Harris, who will always be remembered by her children and grandchildren as Memaw, departed her loving family on March 17, 2022.

Nina was born in Covena Georgia, Emanuel County on April 3, 1926 to Bessie McCarthy and George Durden.

Nina was mother to Patsy Carter, Susan Sanner, George Harris and Eugene “Tommy” Harris. She raised her children with love and devotion in Augusta Georgia with her husband Eugene T Harris Jr.

Nina was an exceptional mother who made sure ball games, music recitals, school accomplishments and other life achievements were celebrated and cheered with enthusiasm and love. Her family meals always included biscuits and gravy and if you didn’t have 3 servings of everything, she would think you were coming down with an illness and threatened a “stomach washing”. Nina was also a taxi driver and chef to the other kids in the neighborhood who needed rides to the ball game or a good meal. The car was often packed with children sitting on laps and laying on the back seat to fit them all in, laughing and cutting up while she had to shout for attention. Even towards the end she spoke of memories of those times as she watched her own children caring for the grandchildren. There were no complaints from Nina about anything. She held her pains in silence, demonstrating a dignity for which we can only pray she passed along to her children.

As a wife, mother and business partner, Nina was known for her wonderful recipes served both at home and in the two restaurants they owned in Tybee Island and Augusta Georgia early in their marriage. She was most proud of her years spent volunteering in many capacities for her church, Woodlawn Baptist of Augusta and Grovetown.

Now she is in heaven where pain and suffering is no more and her strength and dignity can shine upon us all.

She was preceded in death by her husband Eugene Harris, brother Jack McCarthy and grandson Walton Harris.

Aside from the children she appreciated the support and care of Teresa Garland whom she noted was like a daughter.

Services will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, March 19, 2022 at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel. The family will receive friends for two hours prior to the service.
