Augusta, GA---Mrs. Mildred Abercrombie Heffernan, 93, wife of the late Thomas Joseph Heffernan, died Sunday, September 30, 2012 at her residence.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11:00 am on Thursday, October 4, 2012, at St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church with Father Scott Winchel as celebrant. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
Mrs. Heffernan was a native of Monroe County GA. She graduated from high school at Gordon Military College, Barnesville, GA and received a degree in journalism from the University of Georgia, where she was a member of Alpha Gamma Delta Sorority and Theta Sigma Phi Journalism Society.
During WW II, she served as an officer in the Navy Waves. She and Thomas Joseph Heffernan were married December 2, 1943 in Atlanta, GA. They moved to Augusta in 1949, when her husband joined his father’s business, the Town Tavern Restaurant.
Mrs. Heffernan was a homemaker, a member of Mount St. Joseph Mother’s Club where she served as president, a member of St. Joseph Auxiliary, Sacred Heart Guild and a member of St. Mary on the Hill Catholic Church.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Margaret C. Abercrombie and a brother, William K. Abercrombie, Jr., both of Milledgeville, GA.
She is survived by six children, Mary Theresa Heffernan, Augusta, GA, Dr. John Joseph Heffernan (Theresa), Americus, GA, Peggy Heffernan Graham (Ernie), Winder, GA, Ann Heffernan Paramore (Jerry), Athens, GA, Edward Joseph Heffernan, Augusta, GA and Susan Heffernan Pringle (Neal), Bozeman, MT. She is also survived by nine grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.
Pallbearers will be Andrew Heffernan, Stephen Graham, Tony Paramore, Robert Gerardot, Kevin Pringle, Richard Capps, Jr. and Stephen Capps.
A vigil for the deceased will be held at 7:00 pm on Wednesday, October 3, 2012, in the Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel with Father Gerald Ragan officiating. The family will receive friends, following the vigil, until 9:00 pm at Platt’s Crawford Avenue.
