Maxine Thurmond Spires

July 22, 1938 — November 24, 2022

God’s Angels opened the gates to paradise for Maxine Thurmond Spires on November 24, 2022. We have lost a wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother who loved us unconditionally, as we did her. She passed peacefully in her home. She was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie Scott Thurmond and Marie Antoinette Thurmond; and siblings, Everlene Thurmond Anderson, Tolbert Wellington Thurmond, and Ollie Mae Nimmons; and by her son, David Christopher Corley.

A celebration of Maxine’s life will be held at 11:00 AM on Saturday, December 3, 2022 at Central Christian Church. The family will receive friends from 10:00 AM until service time in the fellowship hall.

Maxine lived her entire life in Augusta and was a faithful member of Central Christian Church. In her younger years she was a band majorette at the Academy of Richmond County and an accomplished softball player. She was employed by Bellsouth/AT&T for 40 years. She and her husband Darrell traveled the world, visiting five continents and most of the United States. She thoroughly enjoyed her six grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren and they loved her dearly. The laughter she brought to all with her games and tricks at the family gatherings will be missed. She had a place in her heart for making sure those around her did not go hungry and providing less fortunate young children with toys during her travels. She blessed us, taught us, and enriched our lives. We are grieving but we celebrate her life and the example she set.

Maxine is survived by her husband, Darrell Spires; her son, Carl Corley (Suzanne); grandchildren, Tara Hall (Tyler), Chandler Corley (Emily), Kelly Harman (Steven), Lindsey Parkman (Lathan), Casey Corley and Natalie Adams (Josh); great-grandchildren, Jaci, Clayton, and Luke Harman, Lathan and Lane Parkman, Walker Hall and Riley Corley; special niece, Donna Rushing; daughter-in-law, Joy Corley; and sister-in-law, Susan Laughmiller.

The family would like to thank Maxine’s caregivers, Ian and Katie.

In lieu of flowers Maxine requested donations be made to Central Christian Church, 220 Crawford Avenue, Augusta, GA, 30904.
