Mary Fiske Magruder

March 24, 1910 — February 14, 2009

Augusta, GA – Mrs. Mary Fiske Magruder, 98, beloved wife of the late Richard L. Magruder, entered into rest after a long illness on Saturday February 14, 2009 at her residence.

Graveside services will be held on Monday February 16, 2009 at 12:00 PM at Westover Memorial Park with the Rev. Gary DeMore officiating.

Mrs. Magruder was born on March 24, 1910 to Emma Greene Fiske and N. Flournoy Fiske and lived in Augusta all of her life. She graduated from Tubman High School, attended Junior College of Augusta, Randolph Macon College and graduated from Wesleyan College in Macon, GA. She received a master’s degree in social work from Emory University and worked for the Richmond County Juvenile Court system. Mrs. Magruder was active in numerous church and community activities. She taught Sunday School for many years at St. John United Methodist Church where her particular interest was in the mission programs. She was the longest serving trustee of the Tuttle-Newton Home of Augusta and was a leader in the Girl Scouts of America.

Mrs. Magruder is survived by her son, Richard L. Magruder, Jr., M.D. of Augusta; and her daughter, Carloyn M. Ruppenthal and husband, C. Robert Ruppenthal, M.D. of Charlotte North Carolina. “Mimi”, as she was known to her grandchildren, was a devoted and generous grandmother to her five grandchildren and their spouses; John Ruppenthal and wife, Bannon, of Kensington, Maryland; Steven Ruppenthal of Arlington, Virginia; Jeffrey Ruppenthal and wife, Rachel, of Davidson, North Carolina; Andrew Magruder and wife, Lillian, of Augusta and Emily Barrett and husband, Will, of Charleston, South Carolina. Her eight great-grandchildren are Marianna, Carolyn, Marshall, Ruthie, Madison, Ethan, Ian and Sam.

The family would like to express deep appreciation to the caregivers who provided extraordinarily kind and compassionate care over the years; Marilyn Rollins, Emily Hillary, Vita Sanders and Monique Stepney.

Pallbearers will be John Ruppenthal, Steven Ruppenthal, Jeffrey Ruppenthal, Andrew Magruder, and Will Barrett.

The family will greet friends following the service at the cemetery.
