Marion Marshall

June 27, 1940 — October 18, 2018

Marion Jane Greene Marshall was born on June 27th, 1940 in Fitchburg, Massachusetts. She is the oldest of the 7 children born to her parents, Clifton and Ethel May Greene. Marion graduated from Fitchburg High School, then traveled south after she was awarded a scholarship to attend Piedmont College in Demorest, Georgia. It was at Piedmont College that she met her husband, Allen “Daniel” Marshall, whom she married in 1961. Daniel and Marion soon moved to Athens, where both attended the University of Georgia, and Marion received a Bachelor of Science degree in Education.

A few years later, Daniel and Marion moved back to his native Columbia County, and settled on the Marshall homestead in Appling in 1969. Marion has always had two great passions - to help others who are in need and to inspire young people to learn. She has dedicated her life to these noble pursuits.

Marion began her work in Columbia County as a Social Worker for the Department of Family and Children Services. She quickly realized that her true calling was in education, and soon began a lauded and prosperous career in the Columbia County School System. She taught for over 28 years, most of that time as a Georgia History Teacher for Junior High and Middle Schools. She was loved by her students and fellow teachers and was named Teacher of the Year for Columbia County on two occasions. Marion inspired her students, leading several of them to create History Day projects that were selected to compete at state and national levels.

In addition to inspiring others, Marion always worked to further her own education. She obtained a Specialist Degree in Administrative Education from Augusta College and moved from teaching to administration, working as an Assistant Principal and eventually to the position of Middle School Curriculum Director for Columbia County Schools. Not content to just work, she dedicated herself to higher learning. She was a member of Gamma Delta Teacher's Sorority, The Columbia County Historical Society, and served on the Columbia County Library Board. She is well known, loved and held in high regard by current and retired employees of the Columbia County School System.

After retirement, Marion remained an active proponent of education, and was a mentor to many teachers and administrators. As a cancer survivor, Marion volunteered for the American Cancer Society, and also served as a hospice worker in area hospitals.

Daniel and Marion are members of Kiokee Baptist Church in Appling, and she served on several church committees. Most notably, she established and managed the first daycare center at Kiokee Baptist Church.

Marion enjoyed traveling with her husband, and over the years they have visited almost all of the states in the U.S. states, including Alaska and Hawaii. She has also traveled overseas, to exotic locations such Greece, Australia, New Zealand and Israel. Her favorite place was the beach.

Marion is the loving mother of three children: Allen Daniel Jr (Gwen), who live in Grovetown; Linda (Mike), who live in Hopewell Junction, NY; and Cindy (Joe), who live in Naples, Florida. She is also a wonderful Grandmother to Eli (Mandy) Marshall, Jeremy Marshall, Nikki (Denis) Casey, Katie Gilchrist and Great-Grandmother to Cassie and Charlotte Marshall.

Marion is the oldest sibling of 5 brothers (Jack, Bob, George, Bill, Rick) and 1 sister (Linda). Marion has many Brother and Sisters-in-law, numerous nephews and nieces. She is preceded in death by a daughter Karen Lynne Marshall and her parents Clifton W, Sr and Ethel May Greene.
