Major Sherman E. Buell

Augusta, Georgia – Maj. Sherman Edward Buell, US Army (Retired), 77, of Washington, Georgia, entered into rest on Friday, May 25, 2012, at University Hospital. He was surrounded by his wife, Norma Darlene Buell, and family.

Maj. Buell was born in Stayton, Oregon, on August 23, 1934, the son of the late George Clifford, Sr. and Grace Irene Buell. He attended school in Stayton, and he married Darlene Mitchell on March 19, 1954 in Salem. He began his career in the Oregon National Guard. He then attended Officer Candidate School in the Transportation Corps and transitioned into active duty. He served three tours in Vietnam, receiving two Bronze Stars. He also received two Army Commendation medals. He retired after 25 years of military service. He worked as a safety officer for PanAm and Johnson Controls at Ft. Gordon, GA. Since 1996, he and Mrs. Buell have owned a hobby farm in Wilkes County. He was well-known in the Washington and Tignall communities for his compassion and willingness to help neighbors and friends.

In addition to his wife of 58 years, Maj. Buell is survived by his son Randy (Debbie) Buell of Mogadore, OH; three daughters, Karen Buell (Chet Thomas) of Salem, OR, Lisa (Larry) Oglesby of Madison, GA, Lora (Tommy) Garland of Grovetown, GA; and his brother, George C. Buell, Jr. of Caldwell, ID. Also surviving him are eight beloved grandchildren Amy (Ken) Bator, Ryan (Kara) Buell, Benae Buell-Leckenby (Stephen Bigler), Holly Drumm, Michael (Brooke) Stopher, Stephen Stopher, Ashley Oglesby, and Julie Oglesby, and nine great-grandchildren.
