Lewis Pop Newman

Augusta, GA – Lewis “Pop” A. Newman, 97, entered into rest on Sunday, November 20, 2016 at home with his family. He was the fifth child born to Morgan and Nora Newman on April 18, 1919 in Augusta, GA. Married to Ouida “Teeny” Tucker Newman for 71 years until her death in 2013.

The family will receive friends at Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel on Tuesday evening, November 22, 2016 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM. Funeral services will be private.

Mr. Newman was educated in the Richmond County Schools of Houghton and ARC, while at ARC he made close friends who remained family friends until their passing. He also went on to attend Augusta College. Mr. Newman served in the U.S. Air Force attaining the rank of Captain after the European Theater of Operation in N. Africa, in WWII. As a self-taught business man, he started several companies including Heating & Air, Cleaning Supply, and for 30 years was founder and owner of Launder House / White House cleaners.

Mr. Newman was a member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served for four years in the Augusta City Council, 1965-1968, and then became Mayor, 1973-1981. He was Past President of the Uptown Kiwanis Club, Past Lieutenant Governor of Georgia Kiwanis, President of Georgia Municipal Association. Mr. Newman was also a member of several commissions and authorities including the Chamber of Commerce, Metropolitan Council of Governments, Augusta Aviation Commission, and was a consultant of Zimmerman, Evans, and Leopold.

Although his achievements were grand, his love and devotion to Teeny, family, and friends were the most important thing to him. He also enjoyed golfing, hunting, and fishing with his lifetime friends from ARC. In retirement his favorite past times were reading constantly, swimming, sitting on the side porch, and watching the rain. Mr. Newman was a man of honor and integrity with an emphasis on good work ethics.

In addition to his wife, he was preceded in death by his son; Lewis “Buz” Newman, siblings; Donald Newman, Roscoe Newman, Harry Newman, Dorothy “Dot” Nowell, and granddaughter; Melodie Newman.

Survivors include his son; William “Billy” Newman and wife Karen of FL, daughters; Adele Damiano and husband Frank of Augusta, GA, Betsy McLean of FL, five grandchildren, Robert “Bert” Smith and wife Donna, Brian Smith and wife Mitchell, Tricia Gregg and husband Justin, Brady McLean and wife Destiny, and Douglas McLean and wife Michelle; eight great grandchildren, two great great grandchildren; nieces and nephews, Carol Newman Haskins and husband Roland, Janet Nowell Isenberg and husband Walter, Nancy Geenan, Lee Nowell and wife Emmie, and Bobby Nowell; and a special daughter-in-law, Sharon Newman, wife of the late Buz Newman.
