Mr. Lawrence Carlyle “Larry” Long Sr., 79, entered into rest on Monday, April 29, 2013 at University Hospital. Larry was preceded in death by his father and mother, Tom and Loretta Long, and his brother Russell Long.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, May 3, 2013 at 11:00 AM at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with Elder Dwayne Hooven officiating and assisted by Pastor Robert Lehn. Burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

He graduated from Ohio University with a degree in Chemical Engineering and served in the ROTC. After graduating, Mr. Long worked briefly for Babcock and Wilcox before entering the Air Force as a pilot, achieving the rank of captain, later serving in the Air Force Reserves. Following his military service, he was employed by Thermal Ceramics, where he retired after 41 years.

Mr. Long was born in Cleveland Ohio and raised in Lakewood Ohio. He moved to Augusta in 1959, where he lived his remaining years. He was a devoted husband of 52 years, loving father and grandfather and a devout Christian. He worshipped at the Augusta Old Line Primitive Baptist Church. He was an accomplished swimmer in both high school and at Ohio University. He was an active member of the Republican Party and served for 12 years on the Columbia County Board of Elections, most recently serving as Chairman in 2013.

He is survived by his wife, Faye Marie Davis Long, three sons, Lawrence C. Long Jr., and wife, Paula, Matthew Telford Long Sr., and wife, Sharon, and Jonathan Stephen Long and wife, Tammy, as well as four grandsons, Stephen Long, Daniel Long, Jonathan “Nathan” Long and Matthew Telford Long, Jr. His surviving siblings are Richard Long and wife Roseanne, Raymond Long and wife Connie, Lynda Lavelle and husband Tom, Lorraine Lee and husband Harvey, and Patti Mahoney. He also had numerous beloved nieces and nephews.

If so desired, memorials may be made to Augusta Old Line Primitive Baptist Church, 3646 Old Petersburg Road, Martinez, GA 30907.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Thursday evening, May 2, 2012 from 6:00 until 8:00 PM.
