Evans, GA – Mrs. Karen M. Hayes, loving wife of Mr. John F. Hayes, entered into rest on Thursday, November 28, 2013 at her residence.

A memorial service will be held at 5:00PM on Monday, December 2, 2013 at Platt’s Funeral Home Belair Rd. Chapel with Rev. Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating. The family will receive friends from 4:00 PM until service time at the funeral home.

In addition to her husband, John, she is survived by her two sons, Andrew M. Hayes, PhD of Silver Springs, Md. and Jeffrey E. Hayes (Jacqueline); a grandson, Gavin M. Hayes; a granddaughter, Megan E. Gee all of Wilmington, NC.; brother in law, Dr. David (Kathleen) Hayes of Orchard Park, NY and Vero Beach, FL ; a brother George (Joan) Mettler of Ramsey, NJ; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Mrs. Hayes received a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Elmira College and a Master’s Degree in Math Education from Francis Marion University. She retired from Georgia Regents University, formerly Augusta State University, where she taught Math and was Coordinator of the Math Component of the Learning Support Department and also oversaw the Math Lab. Mrs. Hayes was a sustaining member of the University Hospital Board of Volunteers and a member of the West Lake Lady Lakers.

The family would like to express their heartfelt gratitude to Dr. Michael Macfee, Dr. Sharad Ghamande and the staff of personnel of the AOA Cancer Group and GRU Cancer Clinic for their thorough and compassionate care administered over all the years, also to the staff of CareSouth Hospice for their assistance and thoughtful care.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to the Lydia Project, 1369 Interstate Parkway, Augusta, George 30909.
