Harlem, GA – Chief Joseph “J.B.” Harrell, Jr., 80, beloved husband of 64 years of Mrs. Martha Stiefel Harrell, entered into rest on Tuesday March 10, 2009 at his residence.

Graveside services will be held on Friday, March 13, 2009 at 11:00 AM at Westview Cemetery with the Reverend William F. Harrell officiating.

Chief Harrell attended the Academy of Richmond County. After high school Chief Harrell entered the United States Navy and served in the South Pacific Campaign. Upon leaving the Navy in 1946, he worked as a machinist for the C& WC Railroad until joining the Augusta City Fire Department in 1951. He later became chief of West Richmond County Fire Department until merging with Richmond County Fire Department. Chief Harrell served as Assistant Chief until being promoted to Chief of Richmond County Fire Department. He retired from fire service in 1992.

Chief Harrell was a member of Abilene Baptist Church. He was a fifty year Mason, a member of John S. Davidson Lodge #677 and also a member of Alee Temple of the Shrine. He was also the President of the local chapter of Muscular Dystrophy Association for five years.

In addition to his wife, Chief Harrell is survived by his four sons, Lloyd Edward Harrell of Evans, GA, Joseph B. “Jay” Harrell, III of Grovetown, GA, Giles T. “Tommy” Harrell also of Grovetown, GA, and Dale Jerome Harrell of Harlem, GA; his grandchildren, Lloyd E. Harrell, Jr. of Houston, TX, Joseph B. Harrell, IV of Evans, GA, Christopher M. Harrell of Dallas, GA, Teresa Harrell Bertolone of Evans, GA, Robert T. Harrell of Powder Springs, GA Giles T. Harrell, Jr. of Wilmington, OH, Gregory M. Harrell of Columbus, MS, and Jennifer E. Harrell of Grovetown, GA; and also his eleven great-grandchildren.

Chief Harrell was preceded in death by his daughter, Theresa Ann Harrell; his sisters, Martha Harrell Pennock and Edna Harrell Batchelor; his brother, Lloyd Harrell; and also his grandson, James Timothy Harrell.

Pallbearers will be members of the Richmond County Fire Department.
