John Downing Chandler

Augusta, GA – Mr. John Downing Chandler, 53, died Friday, July 10, 2009 at University Hospital after a brief illness.

Funeral services will be held on Monday, July 13, 2009 at 2:00 PM at Christ Episcopal Church with The Reverend Kenneth G. Rowland, The Reverend Theodore O. Atwood, Jr, and The Very Reverend Robert D. Fain officiating. Interment will follow in Summerville Cemetery.

John, born in Augusta, was the son of Jane Downing and Arthur Bleakley Chandler. He is survived by his brother, Arthur Bleakley Chandler, Jr. his wife Susan; two nephews, Arthur Bleakley Chandler, III, Edward Ford Molloy Chandler, and a niece, Elizabeth Murfree Chandler.

He was preceded in death by his grandparents C. Quillian and Mary Bleakley Chandler, John and Myrtle Coons Downing and his younger brother, Edward Warwick Chandler.

John worked many years for the Division of Public Safety at the Medical College of Georgia, where he was loved by his co-workers and his many friends at the Medical College. He was a devoted member of Christ Episcopal Church where he was a member of the choir. He gave much of his life to helping others. He is loved by the church members, who are a second family to him.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Christ Episcopal Church, 1900 Green Street, Augusta, Georgia, 30904.
