Augusta, GA---Mr. John Davison (“Jack”) Capers died Wednesday, June 3, 2009, at the age of 85.

A graveside service will be held on Saturday, June 6, 2009 at the Summerville Cemetery at 11:00 A.M., Dr. Leslie Holmes officiating.

Mr. Capers, a life-long resident of Augusta, graduated from the Academy of Richmond County. He received his Bachelor of Laws degree from the University of Georgia Law School in 1948. After graduating from law school, Mr. Capers began his law practice in Augusta with the law firm of Cumming, Nixon, Eve & Waller and became a partner in 1952. In 1992, Mr. Capers became a partner in the law firm of Capers, Dunbar, Sanders, Bruckner & Clarke. He retired after practicing law in Augusta for almost 50 years.

Mr. Capers served his country during World War II as a Second Lieutenant in the U.S. Army Air Force. He was a Pilot of the single engine fighter aircraft P-51 Mustang.

Mr. Capers was a member of the Georgia Bar Association and the American Bar Association. He was a member and served as President of the Augusta Bar Association and served as a member and as President of the Georgia Defense Lawyers Association. Mr. Capers was a member of the Sigma Alpha Epsilon Fraternity and the Gridiron Society. He was also a member of the Augusta Assembly, the Chamber of Commerce of Augusta, the Augusta Golf Association and the Augusta Country Club.

Mr. Capers was a member of the Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church. He served as a Deacon, a Ruling Elder and Trustee at Reid Memorial. He also served as a Trustee of the Reid Memorial Church Corporation.

Mr. Capers served as President and member of the Board of Directors of the Boys Club of Augusta and served as President and a member of the Board of Directors of Westover Memorial Park. He also served as a member of the Board of Directors of Georgia Railroad Bank & Trust Company, the Richmond County Bank and Georgia State Bank. Mr. Capers was also a member and served as Chairman of the Advisory Board of First Union National Bank in Augusta.

Mr. Capers was the son of the late Frank W. Capers and Lisa Fargo Capers of Augusta.
Mr. Capers is survived by his wife Margaret Sherman Capers and his son Jack Capers, Jr. and his wife Nora of Atlanta, his son Mark Capers and his wife Kim of Augusta and his daughter Margaret Capers Spratlin and her husband Chandler of Atlanta. He is also survived by eight grandchildren and three great grandchildren. He is also survived by his brother Frank W. Capers, Jr. and his wife Martha of Augusta.

Friends may call at the Capers residence at 3 Somerset Court in Augusta from 4:00 until 6:00 p.m. on Friday, June 5, 2009.
