Mr. James W. Phillips
Waynesboro, GA – Mr. James William Phillips, age 87, beloved husband of Gertrude Maddox Phillips entered into rest on Monday, June 14, 2010.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Thursday, June 17, 2010 at Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel with the Rev. Jerry Brooks officiating. Interment with military honors will follow at Westover Memorial Park.
Mr. Phillips served his country proudly with the United States Army during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart. Following his service with the Army, Mr. Phillips went into the grocery business first owning and operating his own grocery store, Phillips Grocery Store, and then in his later years working at the Kroger on Washington Road. He was also a longtime member of Broad Street Baptist Church.
In addition to his loving wife of 63 years, Mr. Phillips is survived by his two sons, Ray Phillips and Gary Phillips (Carmellia); his two grandchildren, Lynn Brooks and Robin Kersey; and also his three great-grandchildren.
Mr. Phillips was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Stella Harrison Phillips; and also by his seven sisters, Bessie Phillips, Carrie Reeves, Hazel Leach, Vera Farmer, Ruby Taylor, Pauline Warren, and Aline Dorill; and also by his two brothers, Irving and Melvin Phillips.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday evening, June 16, 2010 from 6:00 to 8:00 PM.
