EVANS, GA – LTC Hugh McWhinnie, Ret., 90, beloved husband of the late Doris J.S. McWhinnie, entered into rest on Wednesday, March 6, 2013.
A memorial service will be held at 10:45 AM on Saturday, March 23, 2013 at Platt’s Belair Rd. Chapel with Chaplain Michael Riddle officiating. Burial will be held in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.
Survivors include his daughter, Eleanor A. St. Clair(C. Duncan St. Clair, III); two sons, Hugh McWhinnie(Victoria) and Andrew C. McWhinnie(Janet); two sisters, Audrey Graham and Nancy Walker; nine grandchildren, Mary S. Miller(Vincent), Duncan St. Clair(Debbie), Elizabeth McWhinnie, Michael McWhinnie, Andy McWhinnie, Justin McWhinnie, Kellan McWhinnie, Ashley Tatman and Madison Tatman; two great grandchildren, Madeline Miller and Jillian Miller.
Born November 9, 1922 in Refrew, Scotland. Hugh joined the Black Watch “Young Soldiers” in 1941. While parachuting into North Africa in 1942, he was wounded and captured. He was sent to a prison camp in Italy, but escaped and made his way to Switzerland and eventually back home to the United Kingdom in 1944. Hugh married Doris Cochran in 1944 and continued to serve in the Royal Engineers until 1946. He immigrated to the United States in 1947 with Doris and their two year old daughter. In 1948, Hugh joined the United States Army as a recruit and quickly moved up through the ranks. By 1952, Hugh accepted commission in the United States Army and served overseas in the Korean War, Okinawa, Munich Germany, Laos, Nha Trang Vietnam and Korea again. His two sons were born while serving in Munich Germany and Nha Trang Vietnam.
Hugh retired from the United States Army in 1970 as a Lt. Colonel, and began working for MAC, who made machine guns and night vision devises. He also worked for ENGESA, a Brazilian company that made all terrain armored vehicles sold all over the world, before he decided to fully retire. In 2001, Hugh moved to Brandon Wilde from Alexandria, Virginia.
