Helen Virginia Adams

October 8, 1923 — February 13, 2018

Virginia was a strong and independent woman that lived alone (which was definitely at her own choosing) in her Columbia County home …. and at age 94 (1/2); this past Monday night – said her prayers, turned out the light and put herself to bed – waking up in the arms of Our Lord Jesus in the early morning hours of February 13, 2018.

Virginia died peacefully in her sleep after a very long and productive life! She was born as Helen Virginia Sowell on October 8, 1923, in Porterdale, Georgia. She married John W. Adams in 1946 and was married to him 65 years until his death in 2011.

Virginia travelled the world as a military wife until they settled back in the Atlanta area (Morrow, GA) in 1963. She was an active member of the Morrow Junior Women’s Club, and as its President, was instrumental in bringing the Southlake Mall to the Morrow area. She also taught elementary education for eight years.

After relocating to Martinez, Georgia, in 1974, she became a member, teacher and first woman deacon for the First Baptist Church of Evans. Virginia joined and held many offices in the Pineneedle Garden Club of Augusta.

Virginia is survived by her two children, “Jenny” Leigh Adams of Graniteville, South Carolina, and John W. Adams “Jon-Jon” of Augusta and by her brother J. B. Sowell of Forest Park, Georgia.

Family visitation will be held at Platt’s Funeral Home on Belair Road in Evans, Georgia, on Sunday, February 18, 2018, between the hours of 5:00 – 7:00 p.m. Services are at the First Baptist Church of Evans, Georgia, February 19, 2018, at 11:00 a.m. with the Reverend Philip Hedgecoth officiating. Interment is immediately following in the Bellevue Memorial Gardens on Wrightsboro Road.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the First Baptist Church of Evans, 515 N. Belair Road, Evans, Georgia, 30809.
