AUGUSTA, Ga. – Harry L Butler, Jr., 97, died on Friday, February 19, 2016 surrounded by family.
Memorial services will be held on Thursday, February 25, 2016 at 11:00 am, at the Church of the Good Shepherd with the Very Reverend Robert Duncan Fain officiating.
Mr. Butler was born in Welch, West Virginia, son of Katharine Hatcher Butler and Harry Lee Butler. He graduated Berea College in 1939 with a BS in Chemistry and moved to Augusta in 1953. He was a health physicist and chemist for DuPont at the Savannah River Plant. He was a founder and President of Richmond Laboratories, Inc. He was also a founder and member for 55 years of Richmond Associates Investment Club. After retirement, he enjoyed summers in Highlands, NC, where he was a member of The Cullasaja Club. He was a competitive bridge player, an avid sports fan, lover of classical music and frequent visitor of the fitness center. He was a life-long St. Louis Cardinals and Chicago Bears fan.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 63 years, Christine W. Butler. Survivors include his daughter, Anne D. Bailey (Dr. Thomas E.Jr.) of Augusta; son Harry L. Butler, III (Vivien K.) of Marietta, GA, daughter, Elizabeth Jane Butler of Atlanta , grandson, H. Lee Butler, IV, (Jan M.) of New York City and great grandsons, Harry L. “Quinlan” Butler, V and Stellan Isaac Butler.
The family wishes to thank Ida Warthen and Joy Gibson for their loving care and support.
The family will receive friends on Wednesday, February 24, 2016, at Platt's Crawford Avenue, from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm.
