Gordon E. Dr. Walters

June 25, 1929 — October 28, 2008

Augusta, GA---Dr. Gordon Ervin Walters went home, to be with his Savior on October 28, 2008 at his home, in Augusta, Georgia. A beloved husband, father and grandfather, Gordon’s love for the Lord Jesus Christ was evident in his desire to live every day for God’s glory.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, October 31, 2008 at 2:00 pm, at Westside Baptist Church, 261 Flowing Wells Road, Martinez, GA with Dr. Robert J. Lehn and Rev. David M. Beck officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Memorial Park.

Born on June 25, 1929, Gordon grew up in Augusta and graduated from Richmond Academy in 1946. While a teenager, Gordon worked at his father’s businesses, Walters’ Grocery and at Lombard’s Pool as a lifeguard. He went on to graduate from the University of Georgia in 1950 and the Medical College of Georgia (MCG) in 1954. Through his friendship with Bill Shipman, Gordon met his lifelong love, Jacquelyne, Bill’s younger sister. They were married September 18, 1954 and served the Lord in faithfulness for fifty-four years as husband and wife.

Together they raised five children and loved and cherished fifteen grandchildren: Son – Dr. Gordon Leslie Walters, wife Karen, and children Ashley, Jordan; Daughter – Kathryn Walters Lehn, husband Robert, and children Adrienne Heindl (husband Ray), Andrew, Anthony; Son – Dr. Alan Shipman Walters, wife Shirley, and children Melissa, Ryan, Natalie, Mallory; Daughter – Alison Walters Shelburne, husband John, and children Brent, Preston, Lindsey; and Daughter – Jacquelyne Walters Beck, husband David, and children Lauren, Alyssa, Mitchell. Dr. Walters was preceded in death by his parents, George Ervin and Louise Walters. Gordon is also survived by his brother, Dr. Ramon Walters (wife Ann) and several nieces and nephews.

Dr. Walters practiced medicine for forty-seven years with care and compassion. He taught at MCG for two years before opening his private practice and served for a time as chief of staff at St. Joseph Hospital. He was founder of Augusta Cardiology Clinic, along with his oldest son. Yet for Gordon, pursuing the lasting value of service to his Lord was always a priority. He served as a deacon for many years at Westside Baptist Church and was a charter member of the church. A member of the Christian Medical and Dental Association, he openly demonstrated his love for the Lord in his support of missions and compassion for his patients. Gordon also served for a time on the Board of Child Evangelism, Westminster Schools, and Young Life.

In his spare time, Gordon enjoyed pursuing his many interests such as astronomy, music, and photography. Some of his favorite activities were hiking, exploring the outdoors, swimming, and traveling his wife Jackie.

The Lord graciously gave Gordon life for seventy-nine years. He received a heart transplant at Cleveland Clinic in 1997. During this time he was uplifted by the prayers of the Christian community and has since seen each day of life as a gift of God. Now as he praises the Lord in heaven, his legacy here will remain with all those who knew and loved him.

Grandsons will serve as pallbearers.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, October 30, 2008, from 7:00 pm to 9:00 pm, at Platt’s Belair Road.
