Augusta, GA – Mrs. Frances Llewellyn Beckum Baird, 96, wife of the late Wade Hampton Baird, entered into rest October 22, 2013 at the home of her daughter and son-in-law, William and Wadene Welch.
The memorial service will be held at 3:00 PM on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Trinity on-the Hill United Methodist Church with Rev. Greg Hatfield officiating. The family will receive friends following the service.
Mrs. Baird was a native of Augusta but lived in Savannah for 10 years before returning to Augusta where she has lived for the past 86 years. She was a Telephone Operator for Southern Bell and Talmadge Hospital of Augusta. She was the first female PBX operator for the Augusta Police Department. She retired in 1975.
In 1935, she received her Christian Diploma in Christian Teaching and Department Leadership from the South Georgia Conference. In her younger years, she was a member of Asbury Methodist Church and later moved her membership to Woodlawn United Methodist Church when it was located on 15th Street in Augusta. She started the first Missionary Circle at Woodlawn United Methodist Church and served as a leader of the Young Children’s Sunday School Department for many years. Later in life she moved her membership to Trinity-On-The Hill United Methodist Church where she was a devoted member for many years. She loved singing in the church choir and attending the Damren Sunday School Class. She is a member of the National Daughters of the American Revolution, Georgia State Society Augusta Chapter. She was a long time member of the General Federation of Women’s Club, a past member of the Augusta Woman’s Club, and she served as Past-President of the Oriental Garden Club. She loved gardening, playing bridge, and spending time with her family and friends.
She was the daughter of the late Palmer and Ruth Johnson Beckum, and the granddaughter of the late Wesley Andrew and Rosa Stalnaker Johnson and the late Edward Oliver and Mattie Palmer Beckum.
Survivors Family included 3 daughters, Rosemary Baird of Florida, Frances Baird Muns Rowell (Jack) of Augusta, Wadene Baird Welch (William) of Augusta. Grandchildren: Carol Muns Thompson (Joseph), Christine Muns Leatherman (Jeffery), Lawrence Muns, Jr. (Linda), Dr. Amy Welch Holsten (Dr. Steve Holsten), Dr. Melissa Welch Shepard (Jason), and Angie Welch Benjamin (Scott). 13 great grandchildren and 7 step great grandchildren and 1 great-great grandchild.
