From her birth in Stapleton, Georgia August 12,1918 to her death on Tuesday, June 14, 2016 she nourished people around her with love, faith in God and a listening and caring heart. She was always devoted and faithful to her family, friends, colleagues and her beloved First Baptist Church of Augusta. Evelyn was born in Stapleton, Georgia to Samuel Cicero Smith McNair and Martha Mae (Mattie) Denton McNair. After graduation from Stapleton High School in 1935 Eve-lyn received her BS degree at Georgia College for Women in Milledgeville, GA and a BA in Li-brary Science from Emory University in Atlanta, GA. She taught briefly in Metter, GA and Sandersville, GA. and then became the librarian at Tubman High School in Augusta. Augusta became her permanent home when she met and married Charles F. Shaefer, Sr. on March 13, 1948. They had one son, Charles F. Shaefer, Jr. Evelyn went on to become the first librarian at Langford Middle School and stayed in that position until 1980 when she learned she was to be-come a grandmother. Her grandsons Davis and Mark Shaefer were a bright light in her life for the remainder of her life. Up until the end she remained mentally sharp and delighted in “visiting” with people sharing the stories of growing up in Stapleton alongside her brother, Samuel Weldon McNair. Evelyn was truly a Southern lady who lived a full and productive life that was guided by her Christian faith. She was a dependable and a loving Christian wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and friend. We were all most blessed by her long, beautiful life.

She is survived by her grandsons, Mark McNair Shaefer (Alexis Bashinski Shaefer), Charles Davis Shaefer (friend, Ashley Owens), great grandson, Allan McNair Shaefer, daughter-in-law, Nan Hall Shaefer, sister-in-law, Faye Kitchens McNair, nieces, Dolly McNair Pennington (Sam), Evelyn Raye McNair, Marilyn Rose McNair, and nephew, Samuel C.S. McNair (Emily Johnson McNair) and several great nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, her brother and her son.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church of Augusta, 3500 Walton Way Extension, Augusta, GA 30909.
