David Mason Powell

August 3, 1939 — February 25, 2015

Grovetown, GA – David Mason Powell born August 3, 1939 in Augusta, GA, he was the son of Heidt W. and Ruth (Trader) Powell. He passed away peacefully on February 25, 2015 at his home where he wanted to be. He was 75 years of age and married Marie Meyers Powell for over 50 plus years.

A graveside service to be held at 11:00 AM at Bellevue Memorial Gardens on February 28, 2015 with Ben Creech and Nick Posey presiding. Honorary Pallbearers will be Dan Videtto, Stanley Jenkins, Ray Lowery, Johnny Hoehn ( deceased ) and the members of Camp #158.

He was a graduate of Woodlawn Grammar School, Tubman Jr. High and the Academy of Richmond County. He served honorably in the US Air Force and the Navy Reserve.

He was the owner and CEO of several businesses: Pleasant Heating and Air Conditioning, Columbia Custom Marble, Petersburg Learning Center and DMP Builders, Inc., where he retired.

He was a National and Georgia Life Member of Sons of Confederate Veterans. He was a member of B/G E. Porter Alexander Camp # 158, Augusta, GA for more than 22 years, the Augusta Genealogical Society, past president of the Powell Family Reunion and past member of several business and trade organizations. He and his cousin, Cliff Hill compiled and published Powell- Wiley & Mariah, the history of the family ancestry.

One of his greatest pleasures was insuring the completion of the Confederate Powder Works Project, to which he was also a donor. He also directed the Confederate Re-enactors for the Rededication Service. He was involved with the refurbishment of the Confederate Monument on Broad St. and the Confederate Platform at Magnolia Cemetery.

Over his many years he enjoyed fishing, hunting, golf, genealogy, crossword puzzles, and both domestic and international travel. He was a WBTS re-enactor (GA 1st Ind. And 5th GA Infantry and 32nd GA Artillery). He served as one of the Honor Guard for the Hunley.

He was hard working, strong willed, very knowledgeable on many subjects, generous, honorable, caring, and a true son of the South. He believed his word was his bond and a handshake always sealed a deal.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister, Nancy Powell Newman, her son Rick Newman and his in-laws John J. and Dorothy (Hair) Meyers.

He is survived by his wife , Marie M. Powell, his daughter, Pamela P. Rudder, grandsons, Joshua D. Rudder and Christopher M. Rudder, great grandsons Raymond Andrew Rudder and Tobias Wiley-Rudder, nieces, Lisa Newman, Jennifer Sanders and Cheryl Polatty, several great nieces and nephews, his brother and sister-in-law, Joe and Karen Meyers, several extended family members and many close and dear friends.

A family visitation will be held on February 27, 2015 at Platt’s Funeral Home on Belair Road from 6 to 8 PM.
