Augusta, GA – SFC Clarence E. “Hap” Long, Sr., 83, of Augusta went home to be with his Lord on Wednesday, September 14, 2011.

Funeral services with full military honors will be held at 1:00 PM on Saturday, September 17, 2011 at Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel with Rev. Roy McVeigh and Rev. Danny Key officiating. Interment to follow in Westview Cemetery.

Hap was born in Wichita, Kansas. He gave 30 years of his life to the U.S. Army before retiring with an honorable discharge. Hap was an avid sports fan and his favorite baseball team was the Atlanta Braves. He coached numerous baseball and football teams at the recreation level throughout the years. Hap also coached at the high school level at Aquinas. He was also an inaugural member of the Augusta Green Jacket Club. Hap touched many lives and will be missed by all who loved him.

Hap is survived by his wife and best friend of 59 years, Zerola Johnson Long; by his children, Clarence E. Long, Jr. (Glenda), Russell Andrew Long, Donna Elaine Long, Donald Edward Long (Tracie), and Justin Eugene Long; and by his grandchildren, Kathryn Anna Genter (J.T.) and Devin Taylor Long.

Hap was preceded in death by his parents Russell Newton Long and Maudie Bessie Highfill.

The family would like to give a special thanks to the staff at The Place at Martinez on Pleasant Home Road.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Friday evening, September 16, 2011 from 7:00 to 9:00 PM.
