Charles Reed Fleenor

Evans – Mr. Charles Fleenor died on Monday, June 11, 2012 at Windermere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.

Graveside services will be held on Saturday, June 16, 2012 at 2:00PM at Westover Memorial Park.

Charles was born near Bristol, Virginia on November 1, 1920 and grew up on a farm near Eaton, Ohio. He served in the Navy during WWII. After discharge from the Navy, he received a B.A. degree from Earlham College in Richmond, Indiana and later, an M.A. from Purdue University. He taught mathematics in Cambridge City, Indiana for seven years before accepting a position of Assistant Professor of Mathematics at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He also taught summer sessions in National Science Foundation Summer Institutes for mathematics teachers at Morehead College, University of Michigan and Syracuse University in Chautauqua, New York. In 1969 he moved to California, joining two other colleagues to become a self employed mathematics textbook writer. He was a co-author of over 25 mathematics textbooks covering grades K-12. Some of his books were translated into French, Spanish and native Hawaiian languages. He enjoyed playing tennis and competed in many local and national senior tournaments. He served as President of the Northern California Senior Tennis Association for five years.

His wife, Vanecia Fleenor, preceded him in death in 2005. They were married for more than 65 years. He is survived by his sons, James of Graniteville, South Carolina and David of Martinez, Georgia, two grandsons; Matthew of Daytona beach, Florida and Scott of Godfrey, Illinois and a granddaughter Terri Boyatt of Muncie, Indiana, and three great grandchildren, Jessica, Samantha and Adam Boyatt, all of Muncie, Indiana.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Saturday, June 16, 2012 from 10:00 am until 12:00 pm.
