MRS. CATHERINE BLANOS RIVERS

Augusta, GA---Mrs. Catherine Blanos Rivers, 96, passed away on March 30, 2010 at her residence after a brief courageous battle with cancer. She was the wife of the late Mr. William Fay Rivers.

Mrs. Rivers was a graduate of Tubman School for Girls. Upon graduation she helped her family in their restaurant business.

She proudly embraced her Greek Heritage having been a member of Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church since birth. At the time of her death she was the oldest living member. She was a devout Greek Orthodox and served her church in many capacities, such as Sunday School Director and Teacher, Bible School Director. She also served as youth advisor for her church’s youth group, G.O.Y.A. She was a lifetime member of St. Anne’s Ladies Philopthos. She also was a member of Pine Needle Garden Club, the position of Activities Director of the Mental Health Unit at University Hospital, where she worked tirelessly with patients, until her retirement in 1983.

Survivors include her daughter Libby Rivers Allen (Rusty), her two sons, Nick Rivers & Jim Rivers(Robbie), her 5 grandchildren, Catherine & Lauren Allen, Wyck D. Capps (Cyndi), Nicholas R. Capps, Jason A. Rivers, sister in law, Elaine B Collins, and very special friend Sherry O’Connor who was there for her until the end and numerous nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, Nick & Tasia Blanos, her brother George Blanos & Mike Blanos, sister, Mary B. Katsune, and her youngest daughter, Tasia Rivers Capps.

Her family says their mother & nana was all about family she loved cooking which ranged from delicious Greek dishes to Southern favorites.

Known for her renowned beauty she had a heart of gold & touched everyone who knew her. She has left a void in her children’s & grandchildren’s lives that will never be filled.

The family wishes to especially thank Heartland Hospice for the wonderful care they gave.

Pallbearers will be Chris Nicholson, Sam Nicholson, Don Tyre, Jason Rivers, Chuck Ballas, Sr., and Dr. Theo Theavos.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, April 1, 2010 at 12:00 PM at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church with Father Vasile Bitere officiating. Burial will follow in Magnolia Cemetery.

The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Wednesday, March 31, 2010 from 5:00 until 8:00 PM with the Trisagion at 6:00 PM in the Platt’s Crawford Avenue Chapel.
