Betty Middleton Jones

September 25, 1927 — April 25, 2021

Mrs. Betty Middleton Jones, beloved wife of the late E. Sterling Jones, Jr., entered into rest on Sunday, April 25, 2021, in Mt Pleasant, SC.
Graveside funeral services will be held at 1:00 PM on Thursday, April 29, 2021 at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Road, Augusta, GA, 30904 with the Rev. Roy McVeigh officiating.
Betty was born September 25, 1927 at her family home, Fairlawn, in Clarks Hill, South Carolina to parents Robert Henry Middleton and Keller Fowler Middleton. The family moved from Clarks Hill to Augusta in the mid 1930’s where she attended Tubman High School for Girls, Junior College of Augusta and graduated from Furman University. While at Furman, she met her future husband, Sterling Jones and they married in June of 1949.
Betty was an elementary school teacher at John Milledge Grammar School for a short time, but left to devote her time to being a full-time mother. Her devotion included being a den mother, a chauffeur for dance and art lessons, a paper route driver, a Garrett PTA mom and also as a gifted seamstress of costumes and prom dresses.
As her children grew older, she returned to education as a first grade teacher at the Episcopal Day School where she taught for ten years until her retirement. Following retirement, she worked part-time at the Reese Library at Augusta College for several years. Betty was an avid Bridge player and loved playing tennis, especially with her sister, Vera. She enjoyed spending time at her Clarks Hill Lake property and walking in the sand at Litchfield Beach with family and friends. She had been a member of Trinity-on- the-Hill United Methodist Church since 1954 and a member of the Damren Sunday School Class until she moved to Mt Pleasant, SC in 2017.
She leaves behind those who cherish her memory: her children, Rick (Becky) Jones of Augusta GA, Nancy (Cecil) Mills of McClellanville, SC and Keller Jones of Augusta, GA; her four grandchildren, Adrienne (Marty) Russell of Boiling Springs, SC, Sterling (Katie) Jones of Augusta, Leanna (Jared) Leach of Flowery Branch, GA and Middi Joyce, of Charleston, SC, and her six great-grandchildren, Tripp, Ellie Kate, Barrett, Bennett, Jaxon and Lakelynn.
She was preceded in death, by her husband, E. Sterling Jones, her parents, her brothers, Robert Middleton and Hugh C Middleton and by sisters, Lake Perkins, Blanche Middleton and Vera Holmes.
If desired, donations may be made to Trinity on the Hill United Methodist Church Prime Time Ministry, 1330 Monte Sano Avenue, Augusta, GA 30904.
