Betty Brown Berger

Augusta, GA - Betty Jewell (Brown) Berger departed this life on March 6, 2014. She was born on October 23, 1929 to Capt. John Howard Brown and Annie Mae Brown (Brown) at Fort McPherson, GA. She has the distinction of being the first in her family to graduate from high school. Betty graduated from Tubman High School in 1948.
Funeral services will be held at 3:00 PM on Monday, March 10, 2014 at Platt’s Belair Road Chapel with Dr. Marty Baker officiating. Interment to follow in Hillcrest Memorial Park.

As the daughter of a career army officer, Betty and her brothers, John Howard (Junior), Grady, Richard Tracy, Floyd Leslie and her sisters Ruth, Rose, and Debrater moved often; finally settling in Augusta, GA.
On June 4 1949, Betty married Peter David Berger Jr., a young Pennsylvania Dutch man serving in the Army Air Corp at Camp Gordon. They met at a dance held at Lake Olmstead pavilion earlier that year. Together, they traveled the world as Peter served our country in the U.S. Air Force, while she worked as Management Analyst with the Civil Service. They settled in Martinez, GA in 1978.
Betty was a member of Living Faith Church. Throughout their travels, she volunteered in many capacities at the churches she attended. Later, she volunteered at River Ridge Elementary School. Betty dedicated herself to caring for and encouraging her great granddaughter Emilie, with whom she shared a very special bond. Betty loved the Lord and served Him by living daily for Him.
Betty was predeceased by Peter, her parents and all of her siblings. She is survived by her daughters, Debrada Len Smith (husband Patrick) and Annette Berger Hare (husband Donald; her grandchildren Tabitha Jean Varma (husband Pratim), Heather Annette Just (husband George) Jeannette Marie Lewis, Willard Abram Lewis (wife Misty Peck), Zachary Gene Lewis, Ryan Patrick Smith (wife Inna Bobrovnikov), Jessica Schultz (husband Dwayne),and Cody Harden; as well as seven great grandchildren, a large extended family and many friends.
Memorials can be made to the Air Force Memorial Foundation, One Air Force Memorial Drive, Arlington, VA 22204.
The family will receive friends at the funeral home on Sunday evening, March 9, 2014 from 5:00 to 7:00 PM.
