Augusta, GA – Lt. Col. William W. Petersen, 93, entered into rest on Saturday, November 30, 2013.
A graveside service will be held at 2:00PM on Friday, December 6, 2013 at Westover Memorial Park with Father Thomas Murphy celebrant.
Lt. Col. Petersen was born in Cranford, NJ to the late Ewald and Jennie Petersen. He joined the United States Army where he served for over 20 years as an Army Infantry Officer. He earned numerous medals and commendations during his military career including the Combat Infantry’s Badge, WWII Victory Medal, Asian-Pacific Campaign Medal with 3 Bronze Stars, and the Korean Service Medal. After retirement, he served as Field Coordinator for the American Red Cross with service to the Armed Forces in the United States and overseas for 20 years.
Survivors include his daughter, Christine P. McMahon (Joe) of Augusta, GA; two sons, Warren David Petersen (Dorothy) of Lawrenceville, GA, William Richard Petersen of Richmond, VA; six grandchildren, Edward Joseph McMahon, III, Melissa M. Higgins, Lyndsey M. Mohney, Michael David Petersen, Kathleen Elizabeth Petersen, Zachary Sheil Petersen; seven great grandchildren, Andrew Joseph McMahon, Reagan Elizabeth McMahon, Katherine Jane Higgins, Jane Alexander Higgins, Elizabeth Christine Mohney, William Rhett Mohney, and Lyla Catherine Mohney.
Lt. Col. Petersen was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, the late Dolores Sheil Petersen; his second wife, the late Mary Elizabeth Petersen; and his brother, the late Robert Petersen.
The family would like to thank Lt. Col. Petersen’s caregiver, Sandra Evans as well as Lakich McCullars, Andrew Bridges, and all the staff at University Hospital Palliative Care for the special care that was given.
