William Charles Newby Sr., 81, of Evans, Georgia, passed away on May 21, 2023. Bill was born on September 29, 1941, on Long Island, New York. He served in the US Navy from 1959 – 1962. He married his high school sweetheart, Barbara Reese Newby in 1962 and they were married for 61 years.
He earned a Transportation Degree from the University of Richmond, a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Augusta University, and a Juris Doctor Degree from Augusta Law School. He loved his career in the transportation industry, working for Seaboard Coastline Railroad, Georgia Pacific, and Trinity Industries. Bill was an independent spirit who grew up with a passion to make his mark on the world. He spent his career making this a reality. He had dreamed of seeing the world, and he accomplished this as he was able to work for extended times in many countries. He retired in 2003.
Bill was predeceased by his father, Raymond Harding Newby, his mother, Doris Coghill Matthews, his stepmother, Sally Newby and his two brothers, Raymond Marvin Newby and Larry Thomas Newby. He is survived by his wife, Barbara Reese Newby and his son, William Charles Newby, Jr. (Christine). He is also survived by his grandchildren, Kristen McDowell (Bobby), Elizabeth Newby Haupt (Bryce), and William Charles Newby III. Bill’s surviving sisters are June Carol Newby Mostoway, Ginger Newby Morris (Stevie) and Lisa Newby Carver (Brad). Other surviving relatives include several nieces, nephews, and extended family members.
Outside of work, he loved fast cars and drove and owned race cars for many years. He took great pride in being able to fix anything and was always happy to help anyone who needed something repaired. He loved his family, and he loved animals of all kinds. He made sure to feed the deer and birds that came to his yard and he always had a rescue dog. Bill supported the Lake Country SPCA in Clarksville, Virginia by taking large bags of dog food throughout the year. He adopted his current dog Buddy from there a few years ago after Buddy had been found abandoned on the 29th of September (Bill’s birthday). The second time Bill met Buddy, they were inseparable, and it was decided then that Buddy was to join the family.
