US Amy Master Sergeant (Ret)
Augusta, GA - MSGT Willard C. Smith (US Army Retired), an avid photographer, proud grandfather, beloved husband of the late Ursula Smith, and father of the late Paul W. Smith and Ullrich Wolfgang Smith, entered into rest on Saturday, May 4, 2013 at the Georgia War Veteran’s Nursing Home.
Graveside services will be held on Friday, May 10, 2013 at 1:00PM at Bellevue Memorial Gardens with the Rev. Dr. J. Andrew Menger officiating.
Mr. Smith was born June 18, 1927 in Rutland, Vermont, and was raised in Rensselaer, New York. He entered the US Army in September 1944, and was awarded the Silver Star, two Bronze Stars, a Purple Heart and New York Conspicuous Service Medal while engaged in combat operations in Europe with the 78th Division, 310th Infantry Regiment. During his distinguished military career, he also served our nation in Italy, Austria, Vietnam, and in various stateside locations, and was awarded the European Campaign Medal, World War II Victory Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Service Medal, Combat Infantry Badge and National Defense Service Medal. In addition to combat operations in Europe, he subsequently served as an army photographer. Upon retirement from the army in 1972, he was a television specialist at both the Augusta VA Medical Center and Georgia Regional Hospital. He was also a member of the German Friendship Club.
He is survived by a daughter, Kirsten N. Davis and husband, Robert, and three grandchildren, US Army SGT Harley W. Smith, Kelsey M. Davis and Mitchell C. Davis.
