Sylvia June Whitaker

Sylvia June Whitaker (Gillion), 90, of Evans, GA entered into eternal rest on Thursday, October 29, 2026.

Born to the late Walter Daniel Gillion and Sarah Kathryn Newman (Goodson) in Augusta, GA, on May 3, 1936. June grew up in Augusta, near Crawford Avenue, surrounded by family. With both grandparents living nearby, she was blessed with a childhood filled with love, family, and cherished memories. She was deeply loved by those who knew her.

June dedicated several years to serving as a substitute teacher at South Columbia Elementary before continuing her career in the office at Aldersgate Methodist and the Children’s Mother's Out Program.

A talented seamstress, June found joy in creating things for those close to her. She lovingly made many of her daughters’ clothes, as well as special holiday outfits for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. 

Along with her parents, she is preceded in death by her beloved husband, Johnny E. Whitaker, Sr., and her son, Johnny E. Whitaker, Jr.

June is survived by her daughters, Bonnie Johnston and Joanne W. Percival.

Pallbearers will be Steven Johnston, Bryant Percival, Kevin Whitaker, Evan Kell, Kevin Pinson, and David Zorn, Jr.

A funeral service for June will be held at 1:00pm on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, at Central Christian Church, 220 Crawford Ave, Augusta, GA 30904, with Milton Summerall to officiate. The family will receive friends from 11:00am until service time. A burial will follow at Westover Memorial Park, 2601 Wheeler Rd, Augusta, GA 30904.
