Sarah Evelyn Smith Smalley, 83, went to be with her Lord and Savior on September 13, 2008 after a lengthy illness. She was preceded in death by her late husbands, Robert Wesley King, Jr. and J. W. Smalley, Jr. A celebration of her life will be held at Warren Baptist Church on Thursday, September 18, 2008 at 11:00 AM with the Reverend Dave Dillard officiating. Interment will be in Westover Memorial Park.
After 31 years of loyal service, Mrs. Smalley retired from civil service with the Department of the Army at Fort Gordon, Georgia. After her first retirement, she worked at The Columbia News Publishing Company for several years. She then volunteered to work part-time as a recording secretary at her beloved church, Warren Baptist. This quickly turned into full-time employment for the next several years. Mrs. Smalley concluded her working careers when her employer, dermatologist Dr. Edward Smith retired.
Evelyn was always active in work for her Lord. In the decade of the 40th she helped organized and was a charter member of Bayvale Baptist Church in Augusta. While a member of Warren, she served as a leader of the Girls in Action a part of the Women’s Missionary Union, a teacher in the children’s department, and more recently a member of the Joy Club, the Senior Choir, and secretary to her own Gleaners Sunday School Class.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Georgia Wyoming (Omie) Wallace Smith and Robert Roger Smith formerly of Atlanta. She is survived by a large family that loved her independent and witty spirit. Survivors include her son, Robert Wesley King, III and wife Sandra, and daughters, Kay K. Allen and her husband Charles, Janice K. Martin and her husband Buddy and Gail K. Dellinger; her grandchildren, John C. Allen, III (Lillian), Lori Allen Godowns, Lee K. Fox (Robby), Beth K. Carter (Brian), Robert Wesley King IV, Courtney Martin, Sarah Martin, Caroline Martin, Bill Gavalas and Angela G. Fields; nine great grandchildren, her sister Roberta S. Sizemore of Fontana, California, and several nieces and nephews.
Pallbearers will be John Allen, Bill Gavalas, Robert King, Brian Carter, Robby Fox and nephew Johnny Spivey. Honorary pallbearers will be the Gleaners Sunday School Class.
The family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 7 until 9 PM at the funeral home.
Mrs. Smalley will lie in state from 10 until 11 at the church.
