Ronald Joe "Poppy" Saalfrank, age 75, passed away peacefully surrounded by family and his favorite tunes on July 19, 2025, in Martinez, Georgia. Born on January 8, 1950, in Ft. Wayne, Indiana, Ron lived a life marked by dedication to God, his family, hard work, and a deep appreciation for the simple joys of life.
Ron was a devoted husband of 55 years to his high school sweetheart, Connie (Reese) Saalfrank, and an amazing father to Kimberly Duncan (John) and Travis Saalfrank (Erin). He took immense pride in his role as “Poppy” to his grandchildren—Trenton Smith-Hay (Miranda), Carter Hay, Reilly Hay, Phoenix Duncan, Tyler Saalfrank, and Emma Saalfrank—and great-grandchildren Spencer Smith-Hay and Levi Smith-Hay.
He is also survived by his sister Peg Armey.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Ralph and Betty Saalfrank; his brother Dan Saalfrank; and his sisters Patricia Saalfrank and Kathy Schaeffer.
Ron spent over two decades working as an ironworker, if you look to the Ft. Wayne skyline, you'll see the two tallest skyscrapers that he had a hand in building. Once he moved to South Carolina, he worked and later retired from BP/Castrol. His strong work ethic and hands-on skills were evident not only in his professional life but also at home—he had an uncanny ability to fix and build anything. Whether it was a broken appliance, building a pole barn, or completing a complex project around the house, Ron approached every task with patience and precision.
Beyond his career, Ron gave generously of his time to others. He served as a baseball coach and even helped Connie lead a Girl Scout troop—roles that reflected his commitment to being present for those he cared about. His sense of humor, orneriness, and loyalty made him a cherished friend to many.
Ron had a passion for music and enjoyed playing the organ. He loved researching ancestry and exploring family roots—a pursuit that connected him deeply with generations past. Traveling with his wife to all 50 states and especially going out southwest brought him joy and adventure, while boat rides on Lake Murray offered moments of peace and reflection...while flinging his grandchildren off the tube behind him.
For more than 25 years, Ron called the Lake Murray area of South Carolina home. There he created countless memories with family.
Ronald Joe "Poppy" Saalfrank will be remembered for his warmth, wit, steadfast love for God and family, and remarkable ability to bring people together. May his memory bring comfort to all who knew him.
