Dr. Robert Morrison Sandarg, known to friends and family as Bob, entered into rest on Saturday, February 28, 2026. A memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Saturday, March 21, 2026 at Our Redeemer Lutheran Church in Augusta.
Bob was one of four children born to Stanley and Marjorie Sandarg in Lawrence, Massachusetts. He attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, where he earned a bachelor’s degree with a double major in French and English, a master’s degree in French, and a PhD in Romance languages.
Bob was a professor of French for thirty years and taught at Middle Tenneesee State University, at Paine College in Augusta, and then at the University of North Carolina at Charlotte, where he was granted emeritus status upon retiring. He was a member of the Modern Language Association as well as a frequent contributor to literary and popular culture journals.
Those who knew Bob remember him as being fond of reading, traveling, and riding motorcycles. He was also a lifelong martial artist who studied judo, karate, and aikido before moving on to Tae Kwon Do, which he practiced for over twenty years and in which he earned a fourth-degree black belt. His greatest joy, though, was spending time with his wife and with his three children and their families.
Bob is survived by beloved wife, Jana; his children, Mitchelle Holland (Lee), Kristin Hunter (Thomas), and Eric Sandarg (Raquel); his grandchildren, Thomas Hunter III and William Hunter; his sister, Nancy Rivkin (John); and his brother, Richard. He was preceded in death by his parents, and by his sister, Barbara Puleio (Nicholas).
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the church that Bob attended: https://www.orlcaugusta.com/our-gatherings/donations-payments. All florists to church on Saturday morning.
