Marquin Livingston Conklin Barrett, age 93, passed away on Saturday, August 10, 2024 in Augusta, GA. The daughter of Virginia Livingston Campbell and Ensign Wright Conklin, she was born on February 14, 1931 in New York City.
She attended Washington Seminary School in Atlanta, GA, Gulf Park Junior College, and the University of Georgia where she was a member of Kappa Alpha Theta sorority.
On September 4, 1954, in Atlanta, GA, she married Arnold Broyles Barrett of Augusta, GA. Together they established their home in Augusta where they raised their three children.
Mrs. Barrett’s caring nature characterized her, not only as a devoted and loving mother and grandmother, but also in her service to her community. As a member of Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church for fifty-five years, she was involved in many different ministries. Throughout her life, she held leadership positions in various philanthropic organizations. She served as president of the Junior League of Augusta and the Augusta Symphony Guild. A member of the National Society of Colonial Dames of America in the state of Georgia, she served as town chairman in Augusta. Mrs. Barrett was a member of the Mayflower Society, the National Society of The Daughters of the American Revolution, and the Augusta Genealogical Society. She was also a member of the Augusta Assembly and the Augusta Country Club.
Mrs. Barrett leaves to her family and friends a legacy of Christian faith actively lived and passed on with grace. We rejoice that she is now at home and at peace with her Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ.
Mrs. Barrett was preceded in death by her beloved husband of sixty-one years, Arnold Broyles Barrett, her parents, and her brother Ensign Campbell Conklin.
She is survived by her children Marquin Barrett McMath and her husband Heys Edward McMath III of Greenville, SC; Arnold Broyles Barrett, Jr of McCormick, SC; Frances Barrett Swartz and her husband Craig Alan Swartz of Valrico, FL.
Survivors also include her seven grandchildren: Marquin McMath Campbell (George) of Greenville, SC; Frances McMath Todd (Hall) of Greenville, SC; Heys Edward McMath IV (Lucy) of Edenton, NC; John Craig Swartz (Emma) of Charlotte, NC; William Bradford Swartz (Shauna) of Tampa, FL; Laura Swartz Brautigam (Austin) of Valrico, FL; and Andrew Barrett Swartz of Tampa, FL; eight great-grandchildren; sister-in-law Patricia Haswell Conklin of Atlanta, GA; niece, Robbin Conklin Steed of Sharpsburg, GA; and nephew Ensign Campbell Conklin of Lookout Mountain, TN.
A memorial service will be held Thursday, August 15 at 2:00 p.m. at Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church. A private interment will be held at Westover Memorial Park.
In lieu of flowers, remembrances may be made in Marquin’s name to Reid Memorial Presbyterian Church 2261 Walton Way, Augusta, GA 30904, or a favorite ministry or charity.
