Lewis Carey Poppell

Lewis Carey Poppell peacefully passed away on January 31, 2017. He was born on July 24, 1923 in Augusta, Georgia and was the son of Eula Glover Poppell and Donald McKenzie Poppell. He was preceded in death by his loving wife Olga Baker Poppell; his parents; a brother Marion Poppell; and a sister Margaret Poppell.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, February 3, 2017 at 11:00 a.m. at Warren Baptist Church with Mr. David Dillard officiating. Interment will follow at Westover Cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at 10:00a.m.

He graduated from Richmond Academy in 1941 and played American Legion baseball. His traveling days with his baseball friends was a very special time of his life. He attended Vanderbilt University while in the Navy. In World War II he served as a Gunnery Instructor and a Rear Gunner on B25’s in the War in the Pacific. After the War, he worked at the Augusta Chronicle and then in the local real estate industry. He was a member of the past member of the Augusta Board of Realtors. In his early years he was a member of Crawford Avenue Baptist Church and is currently a member at Warren Baptist Church. Prior to his illness, he frequently taught in the Bray-Cornelius Sunday School Class. He was also a member the Gideon Society. He spent a lot of time speaking on behalf of the Gideons as well as distributing Bibles throughout the community. He loved sports, his family as well as his friends and enjoyed sharing special occasions with everyone. His greatest love was his family.

He is survived by a daughter, Lynda Poppell Blanchard and son in law Tommy; a son Robert Lewis Poppell and daughter in law Katie; four grandchildren: Thomas Maxwell Blanchard III (Tom) and wife Jessica; Carey Blanchard Daniel and husband Drew; Robert Baker Poppell and Alexander Bowers Poppell; six great grandchildren: Leigh Anne Blanchard, Thomas Maxwell Blanchard IV, Michael Nations Blanchard, Warren Andrews Daniel III, Thomas Baker Daniel, and Anne Harper Daniel; a brother Jack Clifford Poppell(Louise) ; and sister in law Jewelle Poppell. He is also survived by several loving nieces and nephews.

The family wishes to thank caregiver Shirley Cody for her long term devotion and care and also Charles Bonner and Carl Cody as well as the excellent staff of the Georgia War Veterans Nursing Home .

Pallbearers will be: Cliff Poppell, Kuenn Poppell, William Poppell, Greg McFeely, Bill Martin, and Phil Alexander.
