Mr. LeRoy Marshall Johnson, beloved husband of Georgia Johnson, entered into peaceful rest on Wednesday, August 13, 2025, at Piedmont Hospital Augusta after a lengthy illness.

To celebrate is life, graveside services will be held at 11:00 AM on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, at Westover Memorial Park.

LeRoy was born in Hartwell, Georgia on December 28, 1938, to Josephus and Helen E. Johnson, the 3rd of 4 boys. Early in life, the family moved to Augusta, Georgia where he was educated in the Richmond County schools, graduating from Lucy Craft Laney High School in 1958. In school, he excelled in sports, specifically football and baseball. He was scouted in baseball and after graduating he was drafted as a professional baseball player by the St. Louis Cardinals as shortstop. His baseball career was cut short due to an injury, but he found a new sports passion, golf. He became a tournament winning golfer and was also an avid gardener. He retired from International Paper Company after 47 years of dedicated service. He was baptized at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church and attended Elim Baptist Church.

In addition to his devoted wife of 67 years, Georgia, whom he affectionately called “Ruth”, he is survived by his daughters, Darlene A. Gaines (Leonard) and Lisa M. Holloway (Michael), his grandchildren, Logan M. Gaines and Mauri A. West, adopted son, Bernard Gaines, his brother, Henry M. Johnson, his adopted brother and sisters, Richard Johnson (Faye), Helen Henry, and Anna Tanksley, his niece and surrogate granddaughter, Kenya Rose, a special cousin, Jane Gibson and goddaughter, Viva Henry. He is also survived by many special and beloved nieces, nephews, other relatives, and neighbors.

The family would like to express a heartfelt thank you to his like family caregivers, Virginia Bowman, Bessie Jones, Pat Hoyle, Gwen Brown, Nancy Winfrey, Robert “Uncle Bob” Johnson, Kendra Griffin, and Meeka Griffin. They provided not only compassionate care, but also laughter, genuine concern, and family love.

LeRoy lived a life that was filled with the presence of family, good work ethics, helping and advising others and tons of humor. He would readily lend a helping hand, and he never met a stranger. To God be the Glory for a life well lived.
