His role model for his practice of medicine was his childhood physician, Dr. Goodwin Tuck.
In 1972 Lanier married his high school sweetheart Emily Morgan and together they raised three children. Lanier came to saving faith as a boy. Lanier is survived by his wife of 53 years, Emily, daughter Dessa Edwards (John), son Will Adams and daughter Meg Adams. Grandchildren include Noah, Lukas, Hayes, and Iris Edwards, who knew him as "Grumpy." Lanier truly loved the outdoors, fishing, gardening, his family, and his dog Tilly.
