JOHN STEPHEN DUNN II 58 of Augusta, GA passed away at his home in Louisville, GA on Friday January 9th, 2026, after a longstanding battle with ALS.
John was born in Augusta to John Dunn Sr. And Ethel Lois Smith on August 21, 1967. A loving, dedicated nurse, John was known by all as a kind person with a great sense of humor, who truly didn’t know a stranger. He was an exceptional critical care nurse who genuinely loved his work and took great pride in caring for others. A gifted teacher and mentor, John, found joy in helping and teaching new nurses, always encouraging growth, confidence, and compassion at the bedside. Prior to his move to Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center, John worked with Dr. Still at Doctors Hospital in the Burn Unit, where he further honed his critical care expertise and deepened his commitment to caring for patients during their most vulnerable moments. During his time as a Department of the Army Civilian Nurse at Dwight D. Eisenhower Army Medical Center (DDEAMC), Fort Gordon, Georgia, John received several awards and recognitions for his outstanding contributions to the care of military beneficiaries as a critical care RN. These honors reflected not only his clinical excellence, but also his dedication to service, teamwork, and mentorship. John deeply loved his family; he never lost his happiness, joy, or sense of humor, even through life's hardest moments. He was a devoted member of St. Mary Magdalene Church in Louisville, Georgia. His faith was evident in his actions, guiding how he treated others— with grace, patience, and unwavering kindness. John never hesitated to lend a helping hand to anyone in need. Whether at work or in his free time, he was always looking for ways to support, uplift, and serve others. His legacy lives on in the countless lives he touchedas a husband, father, nurse, teacher, colleague, and friend. John is preceded in death by both parents and favorite Uncle Charles “Chuck” Sprowls.
John is survived by his loving wife Sheryl Lynn Dunn, three children: Evan Lois Dunn, John Stephen Dunn III, Dylan Dunn Willing and husband Brandon Mark Willing; two stepdaughters: Athena Lynn Washburn and Maia Selene Washburn; younger brother: Larry Wayne Sprowls II and sisters: Daphney Malinda Fowler and Dana Maranda Bennett, Aunt Catherine Smith Sprowls and step-father, Larry Sprowls, Sr.. Staying behind to guard the house are his beloved dogs Stormy, Cosmo & Buttermilk. His plethora of chickens will continue to keep his yard pest free. John’s wishes were for his ashes to be spread on his property near his favorite dog Smokey who passed a few years prior.
The family wishes to extend our sincere thanks to Leola Jackson for the outstanding care and companionship given throughout his last year, along with a special thanks to the countless other healthcare providers, hospice nurses, and the ALS clinic for their crucial role ensuring that John remained as comfortable as possible.
Visitation will be from 1-2pm held at Platts Funeral home located at 337 N Belair Rd, Evans, GA 30809. With a celebration of life to follow starting at 2pm. Ministered by Sonia Clifton of St. Mary Magdalene Church. In lieu of flowers, donations to the family will be greatly appreciated.
