John Edward Brodie Sr

November 19, 1947 — March 21, 2025

Evans

CW3 John Edward Brodie, Sr., beloved husband of 50 years to Kim Brodie, entered into rest on Friday, March 21, 2025, at his residence.

Funeral services will be held at 11:00 AM on Wednesday, March 26,2025 in the chapel of Platts Funeral, Belair Road. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service. Burial will follow with military honors at Westover Memorial Park.

John was born in Charleston, SC on November 19, 1947, the only child of Marvin Brodie and Mattie Mae Wimberly Brodie. He grew up in the Dorchester Terrace area of Charleston where he attended Chicora High School and played on the football team. He was a graduate of Creighton University with a BS in Applied Science and a Masters Degree from Central Michigan University.

His military career began after he was drafted into the United States Army and served in the Vietnam War. He spent over 20 years in the Army and retired as an Army officer. After his retirement from the Army, he spent 28 years as a cardiovascular perfusionist where he operated the heart-lung machine during open heart surgeries. During his time in the medical field, he co-authored a textbook called the Clinical Manual of Perfusion, which is still in use by students and practitioners today. He worked as a perfusionist until he turned 70.

His friends knew him as a keyboard warrior, and he often spent time on internet message boards, engaging in political banter and being the thorn in the side of local politicians and a local radio talk show host. He was known as Riverman1, and frequently took opposite positions he knew would cause controversy for the purpose of opening both sides of a discussion. He was a regular in conservative discussion groups, local politics, veterans’ groups and probably his favorite, the Chicora High School Facebook page - where he often shared detailed stories of his time growing up in Charleston.

His favorite football team was the Clemson Tigers, and he never missed a game.

His family always came first, and he passed on the importance of family coming first. John was a devoted husband, loving father and proud granddaddy, known to his youngest grandchildren as Lake Grandpa due to his fondness of Lake Oconee. The biggest joys in his life were his two boys and his grandchildren. He loved watching them grow and always listened to all their stories and accomplishments. He would brag about them to anyone he met. He was a provider and was uplifting and positive in everything he did. He would always offer a kind word of encouragement. He lived by the motto: “Always show up and leave it all out on the field.”

In addition to his wife, Kim, he is survived by his sons, John Edward Brodie, Jr., Sean Ian Brodie (Ashley) and his grandchildren, Serena Ross, Tyler Brodie, Beau Brodie and Monroe Brodie.
