Jane Bliss Baggarly Mathews, 89, wife of Captain George William "Bill" Mathews, Jr., MC, USN (Ret.), passed away peacefully in Memphis, Tennessee on April 9, 2026. Jane was born on June 12, 1936 to Ernest M. Baggarly and Vivian Bliss Baggarly Kelley in Macon, Georgia, where she spent the early years of her life. She graduated from Miller High School in 1954. She went on to receive her nursing degree from the Barrett School of Nursing at University Hospital in Augusta, Georgia in 1957. Jane worked as a registered nurse in the Labor and Delivery unit, where she would meet Bill, who was a student at the Medical College of Georgia.
A devoted Navy spouse, Jane lovingly cared for her two young children while Bill was deployed at sea. She was known for her kindness, strength, and optimism. Her beautiful smile and sense of humor brought joy and laughter to those around her. Jane met life’s challenges with faith and determination.
Jane and her family were stationed in many places over the years. As a result of Bill's final duty assignment at the Newport Naval Hospital, Jane had the opportunity to reside in the nearby town of Portsmouth, Rhode Island for 14 years. During her time there, she formed many meaningful friendships and created cherished memories.
Jane and Bill settled in Aiken, South Carolina after their retirement, where they spent 26 happy years. Jane attended the First Christian Church of Jackson, South Carolina, and valued the fellowship of her church community. She enjoyed reading, traveling, and socializing with friends. Jane's greatest joy was time spent with her family, especially her grandchildren.
In addition to her parents, Jane was predeceased by her sister, Mrs. Eleanor B. Brinkley of Jackson, South Carolina.
Jane is survived by her loving husband of 66 years, Bill; her daughter, Laura Mathews (Tamoni O'Nan) of Memphis, Tennessee; her son, George W. Mathews, III (Krista) of Granby, Connecticut; her grandchildren, William and Daphne Mathews, both of Granby, Connecticut; and several nieces and nephews.
