Hester DuPuy Spencer Bliven died on July 17, 2023 at home in Augusta, Georgia with her family.
Born November 29, 1925 in Erie, Pennsylvania, she was the daughter of Herbert and Rachel Spencer. She was predeceased by her husband, Dr. Floyd Edward Bliven, Jr., and her brothers William and Davis Spencer.
She graduated from Wellesley College and the Management Training Program at Radcliffe College, and worked for a year as Personnel Manager in Erie PA before her marriage in 1950. After six years in Rochester, New York, she moved to Augusta where her husband joined the expanding Medical College of Georgia.
Hester was active in civic affairs all her life, including the Junior League, Augusta Symphony Guild, the Philomathic Club and the MCG Faculty Wives Club. She was a Girl Scout troop leader and president of the Girl Scout Council. She sang in the St. Paul’s Episcopal Church choir for 25 years and was a founding member of the Harry Jacobs Chamber Music Society. She also served as a Vista volunteer with the Senior Citizens Council and as Secretary/ Treasurer on their board.
She is survived by her brother, Herbert Spencer Jr., her sisters-in-law Charlotte, Elizabeth, and Marty Spencer; her children Caroline Bliven, Andrew Bliven II (Susan), Rachel Bliven, Lydia Bliven (Tom Smyth), James Bliven (Ann) and Amy Bliven Shadden; grandchildren Spencer, Hunter, Hillary, Thomas, Teddy, Judah, Kate, Willis and Eliza; and six great-grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church or to the Senior Citizens Council.
Her funeral and interment will be held at St. Paul’s Episcopal Church on September 9, 2023 at 10:00 am.
